Elise Dietrich earned her Ph.D. in Latin American Studies from Tulane University in 2014, with a focus on Brazilian Cultural Studies. She taught Portuguese language and Brazilian studies at the United States Military Academy at West Point from 2013-2017. Her research focused on representations of race, gender, and class in Brazilian popular music, literature, and media, and her work was published in journals such as Hispania and the Afro-Hispanic Review. Her papers can be viewed here. She has worked as an examiner in Portuguese for the International Baccalaureate organization since 2018.
Having left academia in 2017, Elise returned to higher ed teaching in 2025 with a class on making comics at Wheaton College in Massachusetts, which she hopes to have the opportunity to do more of in the future. She also teaches in a less formal context by running the monthly Providence Drink & Draw event.
